Buchanan County Veterans Memorial Kickoff Campaign

Veteran’s Memorial a Reality: Operation 11th Hour

(Independence, IA) The dream of creating a veteran’s memorial in Independence has been in the planning stage for several years.  That dream has become a reality.  Operation 11th Hour is the name of the proect to establish a Buchanan County Veteran’s Memorial on the grounds of the Buchanan County Courthouse.  Operation 11th Hour is a joint effort of the Independence American Legion and Buchanan County Veterans of Foreign War (VFW).

Mike Smock of the American Legion explained that, “The name Operation 11th Hour, comes from the ending of World War I and Armistice Day.  World War I ended on November 11, 1918; on the 11th hour of the 11the day of the 11th month. Armistice Day was later named Veteran’s Day to honor all military veterans. Our goal is to dedicate the new Buchanan County Memorial on November 11, 2018; the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War I.”

How can the community support the memorial? VFW Post Commander Roger Allen said that, “Fund raising for the memorial will officially begin this Veteran’s Day, Saturday, November 11 from 10-Noon.  We will go door-to-door throughout Independence to ask for donations to support construction of the memorial.  Volunteers are needed to help make this a success and they are to meet at the Independence VFW at 9:45 to be given information to take to residents.  A chili dinner will be served to volunteers afterwards. Our goal is to collect an average of $11 per resident help in our endeavor.”

In addition to making a cash donation for the Buchanan County Veteran’s Memorial, you can purchase a memorial paver to recognize a veteran. You can order pavers or donate cash by going to the project’s website:  www.Operation11thHour.org  Plans for the memorial are still evolving and individuals or businesses will be able to sponsor benches and statues to recognize veterans. The veteran does not have to be from Buchanan County to be recognized.  The Legion and VFW expressed their thanks to the Buchanan County Supervisors for allowing the memorial to be established on Court House grounds.

Please consider volunteering for Operation 11th Hour’s door knocking campaign by going to the Independence VFW Hall at 9:45, Saturday, November 11th. You can donate directly by visiting www.Operation11thHour.org
